Lincoln Alexander November News & Updates

I can hardly believe that the first few months of school have already come and gone, and we are already well into the month of November. Some of our highlights and upcoming events include:

Terry Fox Run:  The whole school participated in the walk/run “working together to outrun cancer”. Thanks to our school community for their donations as we collected over $800 for the Terry Fox Foundation.

Sports Teams & Intramurals: Many of our students were a part of our Cross Country Team this year, and ran in our very own Lincoln Alexander Cross Country meet in October. Classes were able to get outside to cheer our runners on – everyone involved had a great time! Volleyball intramurals are running for our grade 5 & 6 students during the month of November as well. Many thanks to our dedicated staff for taking the time to coach our Cross Country team and for providing our students with these valuable athletic opportunities!

Picture Day:  Edge Imaging was at the school on November 11th for Picture Day. Your child’s class pictures/proofs were sent home recently. If your child was absent on this day or you would like to redo their pictures, re-take day has been scheduled for Tuesday, January 11, 2022.

Progress Reports: Progress Reports were sent home with students on Friday, November 19, 2021. Educators will continue to connect with families throughout the school year in different ways such as email, phone call or MS Teams meetings to discuss student progress. Parents and caregivers that wish to speak or virtually meet with their child’s teacher at anytime, please contact our main office if you do not have their email, to make arrangements.

School Council Fundscrip Gift Card Fundraiser: Lincoln Alexander School Council is hosting a fundraiser to help support our school! The community has the opportunity to buy gift cards for everyday purchases or as gifts, and a percentage of the proceeds raised will go towards an additional outdoor play area/outdoor classroom, in-class technology, library books or independent reading books for our classrooms.

A link to the order form with the complete list of gift cards can be found below and a paper copy was sent home with your child as well. Simply write in the number of each card you would like to purchase and submit it to the school by December 3rd, along with your payment. You can send payment via School Cash Online, by cash (exact amounts only, as change cannot be given) or by cheque (made payable to Lincoln Alexander School). Both order forms and payments are due to the school by December 3rd. Thanks in advance for your generous contributions and for helping to make our school an even better place to learn and grow!

Virtual and In-School Scholastic Book Fair:  Our Virtual and In-School Scholastic Book Fair takes place November 24th to December 10th, 2021. Students will have the opportunity to purchase books at our in-school Book Fair on December 1-3. We are accepting cash payment ONLY at our in-school fair. Students should bring the exact dollar amount for their purchases on December 1-3, or consider the change a donation to the school. We are currently unable to provide change for Book Fair purchases at the school.

Although Parents, Grandparents and Caregivers will not be able to enter the school, you can join us online with our Virtual Book Fair Extension! Our online shop is now open – please join us by clicking on the following link: https://virtualbookfairs.scholastic.ca/pages/5146986

All purchases made at the Book Fair will benefit our school by earning rewards such as books and educational resources for our school’s classrooms and library.

PA Day on November 26, 2021: Please be reminded that Friday, November 26, 2021, is a Professional Activity Day. There will be no school for students on this day.

Lincoln Alexander Food Drive: Our annual Holiday Food Drive will begin on Monday, November 29th, 2021, and will run until Tuesday, December 14th, 2021. The Library will be used as a central location for food collection so that students are able to stay within cohorts and drop off items during their library times.

We are very proud of our past accomplishments, and are excited to continue to support our local community during the holiday season.

We will be collecting non-perishable food items such as cereal, oatmeal, crackers, granola bars, pasta, rice, juice boxes, and other canned goods (i.e. canned fruit, salmon/ham, peas, corn etc.). Food items sent in will be donated to Neighbour to Neighbour for distribution. Online donations at www.n2ncentre.com/donate/ are also welcome (please indicate Lincoln Alexander School in the comments). Thank you for your continued support!

Cold Weather and Winter Dress:  Time spent outdoors is an integral part of the school day. There are great benefits when children experience fresh air, exercise and time spent outside. Outdoor play is also a break from the structure of the classroom.

During winter, it’s important that children come to school prepared for the cold. Students should wear boots, mittens/gloves and hats and it’s a good idea to pack extra mittens, socks, etc. in case they are needed. Students should also have an extra pair of indoor shoes to change into at school. Boots must be removed once students enter. Boots carry in snow and ice and cause floors to become wet and slippery when left on. Please help us avoid unnecessary injury by assuring that your child brings an extra pair of shoes to school. We appreciate your support in reinforcing appropriate dress with your children.

Principals can always use their judgment to decide whether to send students outside during Nutrition Breaks. However, HWDSB asks Principals to follow the City of Hamilton recommendation that individuals stay inside when the temperature is at or below minus 15 degrees Celsius. Questions or concerns regarding winter outdoor play should be directed to the school Principal.

School Council: Our next School Council Meeting is taking place on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at 6:00 pm on MS Teams. An invite will be sent closer to the date – all are welcome to attend. Hope to see you there!
