Welcome Back to Lake Ave. School!
September 2024
Dear Families,
Welcome to an exciting year of learning in HWDSB. Here at Lake Avenue we have undergone some changes fun changes that bring opportunities for, growth, learning, and new relationships ahead. Personally, I am looking forward to working with both our new and returning staff, students and families as we start a new school year.
This year, we will be centering all we do around the concept of JOY as this promotes student well-being and student acheivement and learning. We all have a role to play in helping our children succeed and I look forward to working with staff, students, and families to help students gain confidence, solve problems, explore interests, and demonstrate skills. We embrace the board motto; Be You. Be Excellent.
A positive growth mindset makes a big difference. When we take risks and try new things, making mistakes or not succeeding right away is okay. Trying your best, supporting others, and developing resilience are all important. If issues arise, support your children to problem solve with their teachers, staff members or school administrators. Student voice is important and we want to give students the opportunity to develop self-advocacy skills to learn to ask questions and seek assistance when needed.
It is very important that everyone at Lake Avenue knows our school is a safe place to be themselves. Although people may have different views and beilefs, our school is no place for homophobic or racist words or actions. If your child is having difficultly as a target of any discrimination or bullying we will investigate these incidents and take action. Please discuss with your children why we do not discriminate against others, even if it goes against personal beliefs.
As parents, you are also encouraged to stay in contact with your child’s teachers. You can also call me at the school or email me at [email protected]. Subscribing to our website is another great way to stay connected through regular updates.
Important reminders:
- First day of school in grade 1-8 is Tuesday September 3. SK students will start September 4, JK students and new to school SK students will have a scheduled small group AM or PM meeting with the teacher.
- Parents please drop your children off at the playground, class signs with the teacher name will be on the walls. Beginning this year there will be an area blocked off at dismissal to allow for less crowding near doors, keeping our dismissal safer for all.
- Lunches should not to be dropped off at the school. Students should bring their own litterless lunch to school with them to aviod disruptions to classrooms. We have a nutrition program in the classrooms at the school which provides snacks to anyone who wants one. Additional snacks are available in the office.
Lake Avenue is a wonderful place to learn and grow. We look forward to a great year ahead working with you and your children.
Sincerely,
Mrs. K. McCrory, Principal
