Community Weekly Update Jan 18-22

Gatestone Weekly Community Update:  January 18-22
Dear Gatestone Families,
All students will now continue in remote learning until February 10, 2021. Our school staff recognize how this impacts families trying to support learning at home, and we encourage you to reach out to your child’s educator if you need any support.  All staff e-mails are located on our website under the Gatestone Staff page.  Our Office Administrators are also available to support with any technology questions or needs.

Ms. Mason and Ms. Ashton are currently working remotely and reviewing school phone messages on the hour.  If you have a concern and you need to speak to someone for assistance, please connect with our school 905-573-7731 and leave a message with your name and the number you can be reached at.  Ms. Mason or Ms. Ashton will return your call as soon as possible.
Switching Learning Models (in person/remote learning)
Families who wish to switch learning models between remote and in-person must complete the Elementary Transition Between Remote and In-Person (Optional Request Form) in the Parent Portal. The form will be available in the Parent Portal and opens on Monday, January 18, 2021 at 9:00 a.m. It will close on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. Only complete this form if you would like to request a change.
Your child’s placement will stay the same if you do not complete the request prior to January 24th.
Important: If you are having difficulties filling out the form and you need to request a change in placement, please connect with Ms. Mason or Ms. Ashton during the time the survey is open for assistance.  Once the survey closes we are unable to make changes or receive new requests.
Supporting Online Classwork & Student Attendance
Educators continue to provide instruction and assess our students on curricular expectations. It is important to support your child in their learning, but it is also helpful to provide them with a measure of independence wherever possible. If your child doesn’t understand something, needs help, or is off track in an assignment, please connect with their educator or encourage your child to reach out so we can help them get back on track.  Teachers are providing 225 minutes a day of synchronous learning and 75 minutes of asynchronous learning.  Synchronous learning may take many forms such as live instruction, chats groups for students to collaborate, teacher sharing feedback through live chats/discussions, question and answer availability while students are working on an assignment, guided instruction.
Students are expected to be attending each period during the day, unless the school has worked out a specific accommodation with a student/family.  Unless the teacher has asked students to finish up an assignment and log back in at a given time, students should not be leaving their live class.  If students need a quick break from screen time or a specific accommodation is necessary, please work this out with your child’s homeroom teacher.  Students unable to attend classes will be marked absent.
Report Cards
In the coming weeks, educators will be writing first term report cards, which will be made available to families in mid-February. More information will be coming out in the next few weeks as to how these will be sent out to families.
Schedule this Week
Day 3 Monday, Jan 18
Day 4 Tuesday, Jan 19
Day 5 Wednesday, Jan 20
Day 1 Thursday, Jan 21
Day 2 Friday, Jan 22
We are here to support your needs and will continue to work together as students work remotely this week.
Respectfully,
Kelly Reilly-Scott
Principal
