Book Swap – We Want Your FDK to Grade 5 Books

The Earl Kitchener Annual Book Swap (which allows kids to “purchase” books donated by other students for a nominal donation to the library) is happening this Tuesday, March 10th, but we still need your help in collecting your donations of books!  Please look over your shelves for any good condition books that you no longer read or need.  We need English and French books (picture books, chapter books, and all non-fiction) for ages 4 – 12.  All donations should be left in the main floor photocopy room (marked Conference Room).  The Book Swap runs all day for the children.  Books are 25¢ each.

Notice of Filming

This Thursday, March 12th, students and staff in the school will be photographed and filmed for the Earl Kitchener 100th Anniversary short film.  This film will be screened during the Anniversary event and subsequently posted on the school website, Facebook page, and other social media outlets in May 2015.  Only students with completed permission forms will be photographed or filmed.  Thank you to all of the Staff and all of the parent volunteers for their support of this project!  We look forward to seeing everyone at the big movie premier at the 100th Anniversary Celebration on May 23rd.

IMPORTANT – Absences and Extended March Break Vacations

We would also like to remind you to please keep us informed if your child will be absent due to an early or extended vacation for March Break, illness, an appointment, etc.  Our phone lines are open 24-hours a day, and you can leave a detailed voicemail message by calling (905) 528-0223.  Your cooperation is greatly appreciated, especially during this busy time of year.

Nutrition Program

The Earl Kitchener Home and School Committee are happy to announce that the Earl Kitchener Nutrition Program is ready to go!  Next week we will be doing a “trial run” of the program and will be offering the students food on Tuesday, March 10th and Thursday, March 12th.  The menu is included here so that you can adjust your child’s lunch accordingly.  Starting after March Break, we will be offering food to students every Tuesday and Thursday.  Menus will be shared ahead of time to help you plan.  Each day of the program, three food groups will be offered.  A big thank you goes to all teachers who are willing to help us figure out the best way to deliver food to the kids.  Food will be delivered to the rooms as early as it can be prepared in the morning and each teacher will work with their own schedule to determine when and how to distribute the food to students.  We appreciate your patience as we sort out the details.  We look forward to growing the Program and helping to support families, teachers, and kids in healthy eating so that all kids at EK are the best students they can be.

We will need Parent Volunteers to come and prepare food after drop off on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s and some to help clean up bins at the end of each day.

The Big Crunch

On Thursday, March 12th, all of the students at EK will be taking part in the Big Crunch, sponsored by Tastebuds.  At 9:30 a.m., all staff and students at EK will be taking a bite of apple at the same time!  That will be a BIG crunch!  Our special guest, Councillor Aidan Johnson, will be on hand to help kick off our Healthy Eating Program.

Hamilton Ti-Cat BeFit Program

Tastebuds has started a new Healthy Eating Program with the Hamilton TiCats.  The TiCats will be coming to Earl Kitchener at the end of April to encourage our kids to stay healthy!  Here is an article from the Hamilton Spectator about the recent program kick off!   https://www.thespec.com/news-story/5463847-ticats-and-kids-combine-for-big-healthy-win/
