Cold Weather and Outdoor Play

Time spent outdoors is an integral part of the school day.  There are great benefits when children experience fresh air, exercise, and time spent time outside.  Outdoor play is also a break from the structure of the classroom.  Depending on the season, preparing for outdoor play in Canada can mean anything from applying sunscreen to wear mittens and a hat.  During winter, it is important that children come to school prepared for the cold.  Students should wear boots, mittens/gloves, and hats and it is a good idea to pack extra mittens, socks, etc. in case they are needed.  Principals can always use their judgment to decide whether to send students outside for recess, however, HWDSB asks Principals to follow the City of Hamilton recommendation that individuals stay inside when the temperature drops below -15 C without wind chill.  Questions or concerns regarding winter outdoor play should be directed to the school Principal.

Please note the following information on cold weather and outdoor play available on our website at: https://www.hwdsb.on.ca/schools/inclement-weather/ .  And parents are encouraged to go to hamiltonschoolbus.ca to check for any potential transportation delays.

Earl Kitchener 100th Anniversary Events

Plans to celebrate the 100th Anniversary are well underway!  Check out the Anniversary Website at www.ek100.ca for more details about what’s coming up and how you can get involved.  One thing we are looking for is students and staff, both past and present, who would like to have a short interview to be filmed and included in the short documentary film that is being produced for the event.  We will be filming on the upcoming PA Day (Friday, January 23rd) in the school.  If you know of past students and staff, or if your kids have stories and memories to share of their time at Earl Kitchener, please let us know and we will interview you.  We also know that there are some parents out there who attended Earl Kitchener…and we want to hear from you too!  Not available on January 23rd?  Contact us and let us know so that we can set up a time with you!  Please contact Cathy or Kelly at [email protected].

Absences

We would also like to remind you to please keep us informed if your child will be absent due to an early vacation, illness, an appointment, etc.  Our phone lines are open 24-hours a day, and you can leave a detailed voicemail message by calling (905) 528-0223.  Your cooperation is greatly appreciated, especially during this busy time of year.
