Community Update – Sept 27, 2024

Community Message-September 27, 2024

It is hard to believe that Monday marks the last day of September.  Almost a month of school is already in the books!  Here are some important updates/reminders for families!

School Staff Updates
I wanted to thank the AMC school community for the warm welcome during my time here.   I recently learned that Ms. George will not be returning on October 1 as was originally planned, and unfortunately, I am unable to stay on due to other commitments.  I am happy to announce that Mr. Ian Pellizzari will be taking over the principal duties until Ms. George returns.  Mr. Pellizzari is also an experienced, retired HWDSB principal and I am confident that the school is in good hands.  Wishing you all a wonderful 2024/2025 school year.

Meet the Teacher
We have our Meet the Teacher event date set!  We look forward to welcoming you all to the school on Thursday, October 10 from 4:00-5:30 pm.  At that time, you can meet the staff, see your child(ren)’s classroom(s), and stop by the School Council table to meet the new Council members.  Looking forward to seeing you there!

Popcorn Days
Popcorn sales will start Wednesday, October 2.  Students who would like to purchase a bag of popcorn (white cheddar, dill pickle and butter) can bring a toonie to school.  Announcements will be made notifying students when to come purchase their popcorn.

Students are reminded that there is no food outside, and to make sure all garbage goes where it belongs.  All money raised will go towards Student Enhancements.

Pizza Days will begin Friday, October 11th.
This year we are ordering from Power Pizza!

Pizza slices will be $2.25 each and all money raised will go towards Student Enhancements.  We ask that pizza be purchased through School Cash Online only. If you have trouble signing up for SCO, please come see Ms. Veronica in the office before the closing date. The remainder of the 2024 year is already on School Cash Online. Please watch your emails in December for the next batch of pizza days available on SCO.

**Please check your calendars when ordering to ensure your child will be in attendance on scheduled Pizza Days.  For instance, on October 22, students in grades 4-5 will be on a trip and will not be at school for lunch.  So please do not order pizza for your child on this day as they will not be at school to receive it!

**We are still looking for volunteers to assist with Pizza Days.  If you have time during the school day to assist, please contact the office for more information.

Volunteers in the School
We are fortunate to have many parents/guardians and community members serve as volunteers at AMC.  As per the HWDSB Volunteer Policy, volunteers in schools are required to have a valid Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) on file with the school and that a yearly Offence Declaration be made to keep you in good standing as a volunteer.   If you have a VSS on file with us at the school, you will have been sent your yearly Offence Declaration via email.  Please sign and return at your earliest convenience if you wish to continue to serve as a volunteer.  Thank you for your attention to this important protocol to help keep our kids safe.

If you are looking to serve as a volunteer, but do not have a VSS on file at the school, please visit or call the school to start the process.

Plans of Care
If your child has a prevalent medical condition (Diabetes, Anaphylaxis, Asthma, Epilepsy), we ask that you return the Plan of Care as soon as possible.  We are still waiting on a few to update our records and to ensure we have a plan in place in case of emergency.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
At HWDSB, we respect the long-standing relationships with the neighbouring and host nations, the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Six Nations of the Grand River. We also acknowledge the vibrant and diverse urban Indigenous community in Hamilton.

Monday, September 30, 2024, is Orange Shirt Day, which is also known as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.  We encourage HWDSB students and staff to wear orange to school and work on Monday, September 30 to honour survivors of Residential Schools and to center the importance of intergenerational healing and wellness.
