Letter to Allan A. Greenleaf Families about Hate Crime in Waterdown

Sunday, May 15, 2022

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers,

As you may have heard, the newly painted Pride crosswalk at the entrance of our school complex on Parkside Drive was vandalized. The crosswalk is on the City of Hamilton property and has since been restored.

This vandalism was a direct act of hate against the Two Spirit and LGBTQIA+ communities. We are deeply saddened by the harm this has caused. We denounce this expression of homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia.

This situation may cause feelings of unsafety and anxiety for students and staff. To support your child, caregivers can reference tips for adults supporting children and youth after distressing events. Social Work Services will be available tomorrow should students and staff require services. Students and families can also reach out to their school principal to access other supports.

Our priority is that students and staff feel safe, accepted, and included. At any time, a student can find support for their own well-being or report an incident that happened to them or a friend at school.
