Welcome Back!

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome all of our students and their families back to A.M. Cunningham School for the 2018-19 school year. We look forward to another year of learning and growing together!

Staffing Updates

As is the case with most years, we have had a few staff changes for this year even a few over the summer. Since our June update, we have added M. Denholm and Mdm. Raynham to the school as M. Ferlatte and Mdm. Hanson are on leave for the year. Mrs Ciannavei will be at the school in an acting principal role as Ms George continues to return to work on a part time basis. We are excited to also welcome: Miss Witten, Mrs Candlish, Mrs Cooper, Mrs McDonald, Mrs Szpak, Mdm. Lofthouse, Mrs Patterson and Mdm. Lord.

Facilities Update

HWDSB’s Facilities Department has been working hard over the summer to renovate our school Learning Commons and one of our classrooms. Both are complete and will be ready to receive students on the first day of school. Families and students will be amazed at the transformation.

The City of Hamilton’s renovation of the Creative Playground is also near completion. It should be completed for next week; however we will not be using it during nutrition breaks for two weeks to allow the new grass to be established.

Bussing

Bus students will be able to find out information regarding their routes by clicking the Hamilton Wentworth Student Transportation Service link on the HWDSB web site. Questions regarding bussing should be directed to the Hamilton Wentworth Student Transportation Service. Parents are encouraged to register here for the Parents Portal to get up to date information about possible bus delays and route information.

Parking

We encourage students to walk or ride their bikes to school whenever possible. If students are transported by car and dropped off please have them cross the street where the stop signs are located.

We ask parents not to drive into the parking lot. It is a busy area with limited sight lines. These rules ensure that all of our students arrive at school safely. We appreciate your cooperation with this.

First Day Procedures

The first day of school is Tuesday September 4^th for grades 1-5. Our JK students will be visiting the school this day. All students in the FDK program will join us on Wednesday. The dates for the remainder of the school
year can be found on the school web site. Our school hours remain the same as last year.

Supervision will begin on the blacktop at 8:35 a.m. Teachers will stand on the blacktop at the back of the school in order of grade and have signs indicating their name. Dismissal is at 3:10 p.m. and Supervision ends at 3:35 p.m.

Students’ class assignments were included in the June report card. Our teachers put a lot of thought into placing students in classes. Classes are created to optimize learning based on the teacher’s knowledge of student learning styles. This is a very collaborative process requiring the input of sending and receiving teachers as well as school administration. Class changes are rarely made and if a change is required it is done after the start of school so that input from all staff can be considered.
