Letter to families about student walkout, May 4

Dear Families,

Today at Westmount Secondary School, some students participated in a walkout to express their concerns over their feelings of safety at the school.

While this demonstration is not endorsed by the Board or the school, we recognize that students used their voice to demonstrate.

Acts of hate, bias, and discrimination in all forms are completely unacceptable in our school. All staff have an obligation to stop these actions when they witness it, which include homophobic and transphobic slurs.

As a school community, we acknowledge that some students do not feel included. On behalf of the school and the Administration team, we extend our apologies for any harm caused. We continue to be committed to improving our school culture.

Students who have experienced harassment or discrimination are encouraged to reach out to a trusted adult in the school for support. Resources for students to report:

    • Text to 905-963-0066. Standard rates apply.
    • Download the HWDSB Helps app for iOS and Android.
    • Access the anonymous Web chat (https://hwdsb.info/webchat-help)

At Westmount Secondary School, we offer a place where students and staff get to know and help each other. We are also an inclusive community where we make positive interactions happen. We are respective, responsive, and kind.

Every student at our school has the right to a safe and inclusive learning environment that is free of all forms of bias and discrimination. Every student belongs and is valued.

Students, parents and guardians with questions or concerns can contact the school at [email protected] or call 905-385-5395.

Sincerely,

Geeta Malhotra

Principal
