Fall Updates

It is hard to believe that the first month of school has already flown by!  We want to thank all of our families for adhering to and following our new protocols and procedures.  We will be providing updates on our website as the year progresses.  Check back regularly to see the latest news!

Daily Screening

Please be sure to continue to screen your child daily.  This is an important protocol to keep our students and school safe!  You can access the School Screening Tool HERE.

Staying Connnected

We recently re-launched our school Instagram account.  Please be sure to follow us @laurierlions

Reorganization

As you know, we recently added 3 new classrooms.  This is very good news as we have been able to reduce our class sizes.  This reorganization has required us to move about 80 students to balance the class sizes and adhere to class caps.  We know this can be a challenging time, but we expect that come October 12th, all permanent teachers will be in place.  Our school is currently sitting with 684 students, so we are very full!  Welcome to Ms. Mueller (3C), Ms. Home (JSF), Mr. Santaguida (6/7A) and Ms. Boichuk, our new Prep Teacher.

Extra Curricular

While we are not quite back “back to normal”, we are starting to resume some of our extra curricular activities.  The Cross Country Team has started practicing and students in Grades 6-8 will be participating in the Board event at Christie Conservation Area.  Our Senior Volleyball teams have also conducted their try-outs and will start their condensed regular season soon.  Best of luck to the Lions!

We held our annual Terry Fox event recently.  Thanks to those who donated online.  Every class had the opportunity to join in the walk/run, while following health protocols.

We are also launching our student recognition program, called ROAR Awards.  Watch for more information on this!  Students will be striving to show thier strengths in four areas:   Respect, Openheartedness, Academics, Responsibility.  Each class will be involved in shaping what these things look like at each grade level.  We are excited to get this new program off the ground this month!

Parking/Pick Up

As you have likely experienced, drop off and pick up times are very busy.  Our parking lot is not designed to handle the traffic that we are seeing.  We ask for your cooperation by:  walking to school when possible, parking on the street and letting your child walk in, not parking in No Stopping/No Parking zones, and not blocking the buses in.  Thank you for your cooperation.

School Renewal

We are excited to announce the following improvements to SWL.  As part of the Board’s Capital Improvement plan, we received an updgraded Science Lab, will be getting new exterior windows and doors this school year, and will be getting an LED sign located near the street.  We are excited to see these exciting enhancements.

We also used some of remaining fundraising funds, and surplus school funds from last year to install articifical turf in the Kindergarten Play Area.  We posted pictures on Instagram for you to see.  The turf has made the area so much more welcoming and inviting for our youngest students.  We have almost 150 kindergarten students who use this area every single day!

Picture Day

We will once again be holding School Picture Day.  Wear your best smile on Thursday, October 21.  Only individual photos will be taken, but each class will receive a class composite.  Watch the website for more details as we get closer to the date.  Online orders only!

School Council

We are now recruiting for our School Council group.  The purpose of school councils is to improve pupil achievement and to enhance the accountability of the education system to parents.    A school council’s primary means of achieving its purpose is by making recommendations to the principal of the school and the board that established the council.  Once established, the Council will meet at least 4 times during the school year.

School Council Meetings will be held virtually this year.  If necessary, an election will be held on October 18th.

If you are interested in being a member of SWL’s School Council, please complete the attached nomination form and send into the school.  Please feel free to share this nomination form with other parents/guardians you may know.
