Our Remembrance Day Assembly

Students at Rousseau showed respect on Remembrance Day in many ways. We showed respect by listening to Last Post & Reveille and observing two minutes of silence — all outdoors. Later when the power came back on, we went live on Teams to every classroom in the school. Below, you can see the program for the assembly as well as a video of our outdoor surprise in the skies. Families are still able to donate to the Canadian Legion Poppy Fund if they wish https://legion.ca/remembrance/the-poppy-campaign/donate-to-the-poppy-fund

Classes made wreaths for Remembrance Day in advance, to symbolize their appreciation towards Canadian servicemen and servicewomen who died during WWI, WWII, and the Korean War. The wreaths were hung on class doors, so when students and staff walked down the halls they could see the beautiful wreaths, and also seeing them could make them think about what Canadian servicemen and servicewomen sacrificed for are country. Since students can’t travel freely now to all the hallways, we showed the wreaths in on Remembrance Day Assembly on Teams.

On November 11th, at the 11th hour, we went outside.  Primary classes stood in their separate cohorts on the Primary playground and field, and Junior classes stood in their separate cohorts on the basketball court. Mrs. McLaughlin welcomed us. Ms Fawcett played Last Post on her trumpet, followed by our two minutes of silence. Then at the end of the silence, Ms Fawcett also played Reveille. As soon as it was over, the Lancaster bomber and a Spitfire (both from the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum) flew overhead. This was part of the Museum’s own ceremony for Remembrance Day. It was very emotional for everyone.

Here is the program for the assembly, once we came inside and the power came on. Class 5/6A hosted, with Student Council Executive (Grade 6) hosting on camera.
