Welcome New Students

Letter-Remote Welcome-Oct. 29

October 29, 2020

Dear families new to the Remote Elementary Learning Program,

We are excited about welcoming new students to our school during this transition time. The pandemic has brought many changes and challenges to the 2020/2021 school year that we are all working together to overcome.

We want to share with you a bit about the Remote Elementary Learning Program and how your child can best succeed in online learning.

Our school operates on a schedule or ‘bell time’ of 9:00 am to 3:20 pm. This includes 300 minutes of learning activities and two 40-minute nutrition breaks. Regular attendance is expected and will be taken daily.

You can visit our school website to view our bell times for each learning block. Please be aware that specific times will be communicated by the classroom teacher, depending on their work location.

As part of the Remote Elementary Learning Program transition, remote teachers will be reaching out to connect and welcome students new to the program on Tuesday, November 3. Full class instruction will begin on Wednesday, November 4.

Our remote space consists of The HUB and MS Teams. They work together to create a virtual classroom where students and teachers can collaborate, learn, and complete and submit assignments. To ensure a smooth transition to remote learning, make sure your child(s) has their HWDSB username and password. These are the same accounts that students use to access technology in their home school. Access to student accounts can be found at https://students.hwdsb.on.ca/.

If your child has a device, they are ready to join their classroom once the teacher reaches out on November 3. If your child requires a device, a request survey is available on the Parent Portal for you to fill out. Unfortunately, there is a waitlist for devices, so we ask that only those without a device in your home request a device for their child. Staff are dedicated to work through the device waitlist, and we will deliver a device to families who need one as soon as possible.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Remote Elementary Learning Program on Tuesday, November 3, with your full instruction day beginning on Wednesday, November 4. If you have any specific questions, please visit our contact the school page to direct your question to the right group.

Sincerely,

Tannis Hamill
