Lincoln Alexander School – Secure Schools Practice Drills

Parents & Guardians,

Please note Lincoln Alexander School will continue conducting “Secure Schools” Practice Drills over the coming weeks as follows:

November 19th (9:30 a.m.): (Completed Successfully on November 19th as planned.)

“Shelter in Place”: (May be recommended by Police, Fire Dept. Emergency Medical Service (EMS), etc.) is used for an environmental, or weather related situation, where it is necessary to keep all occupants within the school to protect them (e.g., may include chemical spills, blackouts, explosions or extreme weather conditions)

During a Shelter in Place Drill, all students are kept within the school building (any students outside would be brought back into the school) and continue learning as always. There are no public health concerns during this drill as all students will continue to be appropriately distanced from each other.

November 24th (9:00 a.m.):

“Hold and Secure” (School most likely to be notified by Hamilton Police Services) is used when the school is secured due to an ongoing situation outside and not related to the school that requires all persons to remain in the building(e.g. bank robbery near a school).

During a Hold & Secure Drill, all students are kept within the school building (any students outside would be brought back into the school) and continue learning as always. There are no public health concerns during this drill as all students will continue to be appropriately distanced from each other.

December 2nd (1:30 p.m.):

“Lockdown” (usually initiated by Hamilton Police Services, sometimes by Principal or school personnel) is defined by Police as the restriction of movement during the time of a potentially serious violent threat or violent incident that would endanger the lives of students and staff.

During a Lockdown Drill, although all classroom doors will be locked and door windows covered where possible during the drill, students will not be gathering together out of sight in the corner of classrooms as is the case during non-COVID times. Students will remain appropriately distanced at their desks during this drill.
