This time of year brings lots of excitement and energy to the school. As we head towards the December Winter Break a few important updates and reminders:

Popcorn Tuesday: Beginning on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, Kernels Popcorn will be sold during NB#2 outside the office for $2.50 a bag – exact change only will be accepted. Students will have 5 flavours to choose from: Butter Salt, White Cheddar, Dill Pickle, Salt & Vinegar and Ketchup. Popcorn will be delivered to the grade 1 and Kindergarten classes. All other students will be called down class by class to make their purchases. Popcorn Tuesdays will continue for the rest of the school year.

Cold Weather and Winter Dress:  Time spent outdoors is an integral part of the school day. There are great benefits when children experience fresh air, exercise and time spent outside. Outdoor play is also a break from the structure of the classroom.

During winter, it’s important that children come to school prepared for the cold. Students should wear boots, mittens/gloves and hats and it’s a good idea to pack extra mittens, socks, etc. in case they are needed. Students should also have an extra pair of indoor shoes to change into at school. Boots must be removed once students enter. Boots carry in snow and ice and cause floors to become wet and slippery when left on. Please help us avoid unnecessary injury by ensuring that your child brings an extra pair of shoes to school. We appreciate your support in reinforcing appropriate dress with your children.

Principals can always use their judgment to decide whether to send students outside during Nutrition Breaks. However, HWDSB asks Principals to follow the City of Hamilton recommendation that individuals stay inside when the temperature is at or below minus 15 degrees Celsius. Questions or concerns regarding winter outdoor play should be directed to the school Principal.

Lost & Found: Our Lost & Found still has many items left behind, and is ready for a clean out! Items will be laid out during the last week of school before the Winter Break for student viewing. Any items left over at the end of the month will be donated to charity. Please have your child check the Lost & Found for any missing articles.

Gordon Price Food and Hat & Mitten Drive:  Our Holiday Food and Hat & Mitten Drive begins on Monday, December 4th, 2023 and will run until Wednesday, December 20th, 2023. We are proud of our past accomplishments and would like to continue to support our local community during the holiday season.

We will be collecting non-perishable food items such as breakfast bars, applesauce, pudding cups, pasta, rice, juice boxes, baby food and canned goods. We will also be collecting new winter hats and gloves or mittens. All items sent in will be donated to Neighbour to Neighbour for distribution. Thank you for your continued support!

5 Days of Good Cheer: Starting on Monday, December 18th, and continuing until Friday, December 22nd, our school will be having 5 Days of Good Cheer! This is a series of theme days about winter and general positivity, hosted by our student Spirit Team! All are welcome to participate – our days are as follows:

Monday, December 18 – Hat Day

Tuesday, December 19 – Wacky Hair Day

Wednesday, December 20 – Festive Sweater Day

Thursday, December 21 – Deck the Halls (Bring out your favourite accessories. Think costume jewelry, garland, scarf, lights etc.).

Musical! Santa Goes Green: This year we will be hosting a performance of our school musical Santa Goes Green, on Wednesday, December 20th from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm. The choir will also be performing. Please do not arrive prior to 5:45 pm, to allow for staff to set up in the gym. In addition, a reminder that no pictures or videos are to be taken or shared during the performance, in order to adhere to privacy and consent guidelines. All parents and caregivers are welcome to attend!

School Council: Our next School Council Meeting is taking place on Tuesday, January 16th at 6:30 pm in the Gordon Price Library – all are welcome to attend. Hope to see you there!
