Nov 29 LOCKDOWN Info

Dear Bernie Custis Families,

I am writing you to follow up after the Lockdown response at our school today on Wednesday, November 29.

Student and staff safety is a top priority at Bernie Custis Secondary School. A Lockdown is a type of Secure Schools response used to restrict movement during a potentially serious violent threat or incident on school property.

Today’s situation involved Hamilton Police officers searching the school building as information was given relating to the potential of a firearm. Please see the following news release from Hamilton Police Service: Hamilton Police News Release

The Lockdown began shortly after 11 a.m. and was lifted at 1:42 p.m. Students and staff remained safe throughout the response. Students were dismissed once the Lockdown was lifted.

We thank Hamilton Police for its immediate response and support during today’s situation. I also want to thank staff for their leadership and action as we supported the situation. We appreciate students for their patience and cooperation.

At Bernie Custis, we always strive to deliver on a positive and inclusive environment – one where students and staff feel safe coming every day to learn and work. We know these experiences have caused concern for many students and families. Events like lockdowns can be frightening. It makes sense that you might be scared, angry or frustrated.

As parents, guardians and caregivers, you know your children best. We encourage you to talk to your children about their well-being, and any concerns they might have. If you feel like you might need additional tips or resources to support a conversation, please explore the links below.

HWDSB Social Work Services will be present at Bernie Custis tomorrow for students in need of support. Students can reach out to a caring adult at the school to learn how to access this support.

If you have questions about the police investigation, families can contact the Hamilton Police Public Affairs office at [email protected] or 905-546-4901.

If you have questions about HWDSB resources and supports, please feel free to contact the school at [email protected] or 905-296-2504.

Thank you,

Timothy Powell-McBride
