Our Learnings:
Midwinter Celebrations: Onkwehonkwe (Original Peoples) of Turtle Island follow the lunar calendar. In alignment with the stars and when the moon is most consistent within this time of year, Midwinter ceremonies are observed by Haudenosaunee Confederacy nations. These sacred ceremonies enable Onkwehonkwe to reflect, give thanks and celebrate renewal and continued regrowth. The Onkwehonkwe have a responsibility to fulfil their duty as active participants – in the act of doing – in this thanksgiving process, honouring and respecting their roles in relation to the inherent, natural laws of the universe.These ceremonies are observed by all respective nations in the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and can last for approximately 8-12 days in mid-late January and sometimes into February.
