Balaclava Update – Week of September 23 – 27
It has been another great week at Balaclava!
We had our first fire drill this week, and we’ll participate in a second one in the upcoming week. Every year, schools must engage in three fall and three spring fire drills during the school day. I’m happy to report our first drill went very well – all students participated and followed the routines to help keep everyone safe.
With generous funding from Tastebuds, as well as internal fundraising through our Tuck shop, we are pleased to start up our healthy snack program again two days a week, beginning this week. The program offers a small snack from two food groups for students who need an additional item so they don’t go hungry through the day to better support their learning. It is not intended to replace the healthy lunches and snacks that students are already bringing, but is an additional support for students who need or want it. Thank you to Ms. Nelligan and our snack patrol student helpers for helping bring this program to life each week.
Our Grade 7 and 8, boys and girls 3 Pitch Teams head to tournaments this week. Good luck, Bobcats!
Our grade 3 to 5 swim team members will attend their first practice this week – don’t forget to return your forms before Wednesday.
Terry Fox Run – Balaclava staff and students are proud to participate in the 2024 Terry Fox School Run – No Matter the Distance. We will run for Terry and raise awareness for cancer research and the way each one of us can make a difference. We will not be collecting funds at the school, but families are welcome to contribute directly to the Terry Fox Foundation if they wish to support the cause. Weather permitting, we will be participating in our run from 2 to 3 p.m. on Friday September 27th.
The HRE Community Advisory Committee provides advice, input and feedback using human rights, anti-racist and anti-oppressive approaches to support HWDSB’s commitment in identifying and addressing inequities in the education system and to create learning and working environment that are inclusive, equitable and welcoming.
Tip for Families: if your child will be leaving early, please enter the pick up time in School Messenger before 10 a.m. that day. This will help us more efficiently retrieve your child from class. Calling into classes frequently and unexpectedly disrupts the learning for all of the students in the class. Help us minimize the distraction by making those arrangements in School Messenger in advance. Thank you for your help.
School Council Meeting
All parents/guardians of Balaclava students are welcome to attend our first School Council meeting (and election) of the school year. We will be meeting in the school library at 6 p.m. on Monday September 23rd. Hope to see you then.
