Musing from Mrs. Simpson’s Desk Part 2

Well, it has been a few weeks since my last blog post but wow, has a lot happened here at Adelaide.

Progress reports were sent home on October 30. We had two successful days of parents interviews. Please remember that you are encouraged to contact your child’s teacher at any point to keep communication open and ongoing.  Reporting is just one way we share information regarding your child.

We had a highly successful Family Literacy Night on November 6th for families of students in FDK-2. Classroom teachers shared easy strategies that can be used at home to help building literacy skills. Thanks to Mrs. Morrow and the Primary Team for their commitment to building the literacy skills of our students.

We will be hosting a Family Science Night on December 5th from 6:00-8:00 pm.  This is a free event sponsored by Scientists in the Classroom through a grant from ArcelorMittal Dofasco to promote science education. This is a drop-in event, however a registration form is going home to just give us an idea of numbers.  Students and Families in all grades are welcome, however parents must attend with their children.

We are also planning on hosting a Family Fitness Night in February as a way to get us all moving during the long, dark days of winter.

Our Year Three Nursing Students from McMaster are working tirelessly with our Health Action Team and Physical Activity Committee to bring our “fitness trail” dream to fruition. We have also received a grant for $2000 from the City of Hamilton and an anonymous grant from a city business for $500 to help cover the cost of a “Hydration Station” to be installed on the main floor outside of the office. This will allow students to re-fill water bottles with cold, filtered water. The overall cost of the unit including installation is approximately $3200. We will fund raise for the remaining $700.

In December, a member of the Hamilton Tiger Cats will be coming in to run a Boks Session with Ms. Mlekuz’s grade 5 class.  Adelaide is a Boks Fitness School and we use Boks and Boks burst to expose our students to physical activity every day.

Our December PA Day is December 7th and will be dedicated to mathematics learning for all educators. Our Professional Activity Days give us the opportunity to share and extend our learning to improve student learning and achievement.

Our last day of school before Christmas Holidays is December 21. The school will be closed for two weeks and we will all gather together again on January 7th.

Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to our school, students, and our community.

Have a terrific Tuesday.

Mrs. Simpson
