Lisgar News-Oct 21, 2024
Hello Lisgar families,
October is almost over and things are moving fast at our school. Thank you to everyone who came out to our Meet the Teacher event–it was a huge success! Our School Council worked very hard to organize our BBQ fundraiser and we thank them for their dedication to our students and community. Classes have settled in since our reorganization process and I am happy to say that the students continue to be engaged in many great learning activities. Progress reports will be coming home in a few weeks (Nov 12). This is an important snapshot of how your child is doing academically so far this year. It is also an opportunity to evaluate the Learning Skills and Work Habits that ensure success at school.
October 31st activities at Lisgar
Many classrooms will be having celebrations on October 31st. Your teacher can provide more specifics for individual class activities. If you plan to send treats/snack to school, we ask that they be pre-packaged/store bought items only. This is so that allergy safety can be ensured.
Costume Parade: there will be a costume parade for those students who choose to participate. The parade will start at 9:15 am. Parents are welcome to join us in the gym to view the parade. Students should arrive at school in the morning in full costume. There will not be time to put costumes on and parents are not permitted to be in the hallways assisting their child. A reminder that photos of other people’s children should be avoided and never posted to social media sites.
Grade 6/7/8 Dance: there will be an optional dance for our intermediate students who wish to participate. It will take place during the last block of the day.
Costumes: It is our responsibility to ensure that school community members avoid using identities and cultures as costumes. This includes appropriative regalia / cultural stereotypes (e.g. cultural garments), black / brown face, transphobic costumes (e.g. man dressed as a woman), body-shaming and objectifying costumes and costumes that joke about situations that have caused harm or include weapons. Such costumes perpetuate stereotypes and can cause harm that can further marginalize and oppress community members.
Some questions to ask regarding Cultural Appropriation and Costumes:
-
Is my costume making fun of a group of people, their culture, religion and/or belief systems?
-
Does my costume reinforce jokes and stereotypes about certain groups, cultures, religions and/or belief systems?
-
Am I altering my skin color, facial/body features to make it like a particular race, ethnicity, or cultural group?
-
Am I dressing up as a culture or borrowing from a religion that is not my own or is not part of my background?
