A Message from the CEO: National Indigenous Peoples Day
Dear HWDSB community,
On June 21, we honour and celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day. An important opportunity to recognize the enduring cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples, past, present, and future. Throughout June, National Indigenous History Month invites us to reflect, learn, and deepen our understanding of the strength, continuance, and self-determination of Indigenous Nations and communities.
At the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, our Multi-Year Strategic Plan commits us to reinforcing Indigenous Educational Wellness and Reconciliation. This commitment is not limited to a single day or month, rather it lives in how we learn, lead, and walk alongside Indigenous students, families, and communities each day, in relationship and responsibility.
I see this commitment in action every week during my school visits. From land-based learning experiences in kindergarten classrooms to the intentional weaving of Indigenous Knowledges and perspectives across the curriculum. It is especially meaningful to spend time in learning commons where Indigenous voices are not only uplifted, but celebrated, and centered, creating spaces where every student can learn, engage, reflect, and see themselves and one another in more inclusive and truthful ways.
June 21 also marks the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky. For many Indigenous Peoples, this is a time of deep cultural, spiritual, and social significance, grounded in renewal, connection, play, and balance.
As we reflect, we must also acknowledge that reconciliation is ongoing and requires sustained action. It calls us to honour the truths of the past, restore right relations in the present, and take meaningful steps toward a more just and equitable future. Together, we remain committed to listening, learning, and acting in ways that strengthen relationships with Indigenous communities and support the success, holistic health, and well-being of every student.
Sincerely,
Sheryl Robinson Petrazzini
