HWDSB Trustees Signal School Renewal in Ancaster and West Hamilton

Posted on Tuesday, November 15, 2016

Hamilton, ON – Nov. 15, 2016: Trustees at Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) have approved a motion to start accommodation reviews for elementary schools in Ancaster and West Hamilton.

The accommodation reviews mark HWDSB’s ongoing commitment to renewing school facilities and working directly with our community to shape education for future generations of students.

“We’re looking at school sites in a ‘big picture way’ to plan for the future and create the best environments for students. Our recent experience in East Hamilton and Stoney Creek shows this process worked. We listened to the community and then pursued funding to make the vision a reality,” said Chair Todd White.

HWDSB was recently awarded $26 million in funding to revitalize its school facilities as a result of accommodation proposals. This is on top of more than $100 million in additional Ministry funding over the past five years. The Ministry of Education is in the process of rolling out a $750-million, multi-year funding opportunity for school boards looking to revitalize school communities.

“We have a huge opportunity right now to attract Ministry funding, which can help us renew our schools,” Chair White said. “We are pleased with the most recent funding approval that the province recognizes the long-term vision for our school communities.”

The initial and alternative options in Monday’s report are starting points that the community will help shape before any proposals are made to the Ministry. The initial options include:

Ancaster

West Hamilton City

  • Rebuild C.H. Bray
  • Additions/renovations to Rousseau and Ancaster Senior
  • Close Fessenden and Queen’s Rangers
  • Additions/renovations to Bennetto and Cathy Wever
  • Revitalize Central, Earl Kitchener, Ryerson, Strathcona
  • Close Hess Street

Boundary reviews will take place to accommodate students in remaining schools. Status quo and 11 additional options can be found online at www.hwdsb.on.ca/reviews.

“Community members are crucial to these reviews and we want them involved every step of the way,” Chair White said. “We are committed to sharing information about the review process and remain open to input, feedback and questions.”
