Happy New Year.  We look forward to welcoming our staff, students, and families back to Winona tomorrow.

Indoor Only Shoes – For safety reasons, students are expected to wear shoes at all times in the building. Help our caretaking team in keeping our school and classrooms clean by sending an additional pair of indoor-only shoes with your child each day. Switching to indoor-only shoes will assist us in keeping the mud, dirt, water, and salt outside. Families are also reminded that snow and rain can often lead to some very wet conditions in our schoolyard. With two outdoor breaks, it is a good idea to leave items such as extra socks, mitts, and pants in your child’s backpack in the event they are needed.

Lockdown Drill – The term “Lockdown” is used when there is a major incident or threat of school violence within the school or in relation to the school.  As part of our Secure School Protocol, the staff and students at Winona practice Lockdown procedures twice annually. Prior to each drill, teachers will have age-appropriate discussions regarding the drill and their expectations. To ensure that there is no confusion, these rehearsals are clearly identified as drills via an announcement.  We have planned our first lockdown drill of the school year for Tuesday, January 17th. Please contact the school if you have any further questions regarding the Lockdown procedures at Winona and/or review the Secure Schools Infographic.

Incoming Kindergarten – HWDSB is excited to invite families of incoming kindergarten students who might require special education services or supports to a Transition to School Virtual Information Night. Attend this information session on January 19 to learn how we support families with children requiring special education services for their transition to kindergarten in September 2023.  More information including the meeting link and flyer can be found at Transition to School Virtual Information Night for Incoming Kindergarten Families
