Sale of Glen Echo Property

Community Letter_Sale of Glen Echo Property

March 10, 2023

Dear Families,

This letter is to inform members of the Viola Desmond Elementary School and Glendale Secondary School communities about a recent sale in property of the former Glen Echo Elementary School.

At the beginning of this week, on March 6, 2023, the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) closed the sale of the Glen Echo property. The sale of the property followed all provincial and Board legislation, including Ontario Regulation 444/98.

The notification of the sold property is posted on the Board’s website, under the Community tab within the Properties for Sale section.

The closure and sale of Glen Echo is part of the East Hamilton City Accommodation Review, which allowed for the construction of a new school.

We are proud of the staff and students at Viola Desmond Elementary School who have supported the transition and formed a vibrant school community.

We recognize that the sale of the Glen Echo property represents change as the community develops.

While the property is no longer maintained by HWDSB, and we are unable to disclose who purchased the property, we will work with the City of Hamilton to advocate that the surrounding neighbourhood for the Glendale and Viola Desmond communities be considered a priority.

Sincerely,

Todd White, Trustee, East Hamilton, Lower Stoney Creek and Winona

Estella Jones, Superintendent of Student Achievement
