Student Success @ SJAM
Sir John A Macdonald School Student Success is an innovative program aimed at helping all students achieve their potential and succeed in their educational journey. The Student Success Team plays a key role in supporting school-wide efforts to improve outcomes for students who are struggling with the secondary curriculum and may be at-risk of not graduating or receiving certification for their achievements. Direct support to these students is provided in order to improve attendance, retention and achievement rates. In addition, Student Success Teachers work closely with parents and the community to support meaningful learning opportunities for students. Student Success Team is made up of the Student Success Teacher (Mrs. Wyatt), Mentoring Educational Assistants(Brigette, Chad and Paula), Learning Resource Teachers, Guidance, the Social Worker, child and youth counsellors, school nurse, school administration and other identified personnel.
At SJAM we believe that every student can learn and become successful in school. As students, it is important for you to believe in your abilities to work hard, persevere and become successful high school graduates.
That is what Student Success is all about: creating the conditions for students to experience success. Students today have different concerns and we work on meeting the needs of each individual student. The goal of Student Success is to engage every student by supporting their unique interests, needs, goals and strengths. This is accomplished by building trust and relationships with our students.
By focusing on knowing each learner and providing differentiated learning opportunities and programming, teachers ensure that all students acquire the social, emotional and academic learning skills they need to succeed as they transition from elementary to secondary school and beyond.
How does the Student Success Team provide support?
“We meet with students and introduce ourselves as a member of the Student Success Team, being the Student Success Teacher or Mentoring Educational Assistants. We let them know what that means, and what we can do to help them… to support them in any way we can. If they have questions or concerns about courses, if they’re feeling uncomfortable with something- they can chat with me. If we can’t help them, we will find someone who can. If they need academic support; they can come to the Student Success Room. If they need emotional-social issues we are here to listen and work through their issues or direct to community supports …”

The SJAM student success room is a place where students who are identified as in-risk of not graduating are invited to access extra supports. The Student Success room is a welcoming environment with computers and resources conducive to learning with a relaxed inclusive atmosphere. The student success team will support these students as they attempt to improve their grade in an effort to achieve success in all of their courses. Students may be removed from their class for a short period of time in order to catch up on the missed work. The Student Success team works collaboratively with the classroom teacher in rescuing credits that are in jeopardy. Students are recommended for the program by their classroom teacher. Students are also encouraged to attend Homework Club for extra support.
The purpose of the Student Success Team is to:
- Assist in transition between Grade 8 to high school.
- Identify and track students who are in need of assistance.
- Make sure students identified are placed in the correct level according to their individual capabilities.
- Decide appropriate interventions to assist the student.
- Collaborate with student, teacher and parents.
- Develop initiatives to support and promote student success.
