November News & Updates

It has been a fabulous fall!  There have been many opportunities for Every Child, Every Chance, Every Day here at SWO.  Some examples include volleyball teams, band, Glee Club and Leadership Council, Healthy Action Team, GoGirls as well as excursions that extend the learning from the classroom. Students received their progress reports with indications of areas of strength and areas for further growth.  Thank you to the families who made donations of shoes and boots. Dr. Davey School is very grateful for your generosity.

Music Notes:
Our Remembrance Day Assembly will be held on November 10th starting at 10:00 am.The Grade 8 concert band, F7/8 B and F7/8C will be performing along with our Glee Club. Parents / Caregivers are welcome.

The HWDSB Foundations Grant has awarded our school as this year’s recipient of an $800 grant towards our “Fountains of Uke” campaign that supports empathy and music at various local senior and retirement homes. McMaster University nursing and music students will help facilitate this process for our Sir William Osler music students. The funds have allowed our school to purchase a class set of ukuleles to be used in class and in such performances.  We are looking forward to our students learning these instruments and working with our community partners.  

Terry Fox Donation
We walked, we ran, we laughed and it was a morning dedicated to raise money for cancer research.  We are proud to share that donation of $495.35 was made to the Terry Fox Foundation.  Thank you, SWO Eagles!

Donation to Down Syndrome Association of Hamilton
A special thanks to all who enjoyed a refreshing freezie during Get Acquainted Day.   The proceeds of the sales supported a donation of $296.00 made on behalf of Sir William Osler School to the Down Syndrome Association of Hamilton.  

Pumpkin Carving
Pumpkin carving was a smashing success. Thanks to all the classes who shared their spooktacular creations!   

 

 

Hydration Station is here!
Come on by and fill your water bottle by gym!  Thanks to the Healthy Action Team and School Council for the enthusiasm and fundraising support .  Fruit Kebab/Parfait sales continue as we raise funds for another hydration station on the second floor.

THE NBA is here!  Nutrition Break Activities
Beginning on November 27 and running until March, a variety of nutrition break activities will be offered for our Grade 1-5 students.
Day 1, NB 1: A fun Tabata workout for grade 1 to 5 students will be offered in the gym. Grade 5 students will be running this!
Day 2, NB 2:  Games club offered in the Learning Commons. Open to grades 1 – 8.
Day 3, NB 1: Yoga will be offered in the gym. First 20 minutes, grade 6 – 8, Second 20 minutes, grade 1 – 5  Students may bring their own yoga mats.
Day 5, NB 1: Just Dance activities will take place in the gym. We are looking forward to getting students active and connected!  

Bullying Awareness Week – November 19 – 25, 2017
Our Pink Kindness Tree will be in the foyer sharing ideas for acts of kindness that can be done around the school in the upcoming week to bring awareness on how to create a positive environment with small acts.  

FDK & Grade 1 Literacy Table & Resources
Mrs. Grochot is excited to support us at Sir William Osler on Day 2 & 3 as the Reading Specialist in FDK and Grade 1.  She has had the pleasure of getting to know our students through hands-on literacy activities in the classroom to promote the love of reading. Thank-you to those parents who stopped by during interviews to visit the Literacy Table. The resources are available here for any parents who were unable to stop by.  If you are unable to print these activities, please visit the office for a hardcopy.  Please continue to read daily with your children, together we grow readers.   

SWO Annual Fundraising Plan 2017 – 2018
Sharing with parents / caregivers where we have landed on our school fundraising initiatives.  This plan shares the events and activities that will be happening alongside with the purpose for the funds.  The plan is allowed to be altered throughout the school year to be responsive to unforeseen events.  Eg. raising funds for charitable causes

Games Club!  Please donate games for us to play!
Attention students in grades 1 – 8!  Go Girls and the Health Action Team are collaborating to introduce the Games Club, which will be starting soon! This will be a fun opportunity to learn some new games, and meet/connect with some new friends.  We will be collecting donations of new or gently used games, board games, cards etc.  Please bring game donations to room 212 anytime until Friday, November 10th.

Buddy Bench Update
Our assembly to introduce the Buddy Bench took place in October and set the stage for our students to understand it’s importance and role on our playground.  Our Buddy Bench mentors are now supporting those who sit on the bench with friendship, walking, talking and playing a recess game.
