June News & Updates

Got the Gold!
Our Health Action Team worked hard this year at making SWO a healthier school. We are thrilled to be the only elementary school in the HWDSB to have earned OPHEA’s healthy schools gold certification! A huge thank you to our Public Health Nurse, Michelle Greenway, for her support and leadership with all of our initiatives! We plan to continue with the initiatives we started this year and add some new ideas for next year in order to continue to make SWO a healthy school!

Go Girls Update…
The girls were keen to “Get Loud” for Mental Health Awareness Week.  They planned many great activities as well as fundraising for this important cause.  A total of $780 was raised, with $500.00 going to McMaster Children’s Hospital for mental health initiatives and the remainder will be used to purchase items for mindfulness calming baskets.

Outdoor Classroom Day
On Thursday May 20th, Mrs. Grundy and Mrs. Koegler’s class celebrated outdoor classroom day with thousands of children around the world.  We started our day under the trees on our playground listening to a story about the forest. We then walked to the woods where we observed and sketched mini habitats….small areas defined by a circle of string. Everyone was very focused! In the afternoon we headed back under the trees to make rock sculptures. Lots of learning and fun in the outdoors!!!

Leadership Council:
The Leadership Council had a “We Are Silent Day” campaign to raise money for the “WE CHARITY” foundation. Students took a vow of silence to represent the fact that many children around the world have no voice. The students chose to raise money for children in India and to focus the funds towards education. The leadership council raised $370.00. Congratulations to all those students who participated and made a difference!
