SWO Student Advisory Group

The inaugural meeting of the SWO Student Advisory Group was held on February 7, 2017.   This group is comprised of two students from each of our grade 5 to 8 homeroom classes.  It is a dynamic group of class representatives who come together to:

  • represent SWO student voice
  • be the voice of their peers
  • support creating a safe, caring and positive school climate
  • serve and improve the school community by sharing input, feedback and ideas
  • attend monthly meetings and report back to their homeroom classmates
  • assist in planning events  and initiatives for the SWO school community

There are two student co-chairs, two student communication officers who work closely with Ms Neale, Principal creating agendas and who are the leads facilitating the meetings.

On March 7th, we had our first SAG (Student Advisory Group) meeting, first the members of the group were welcomed into the Learning Commons where they were greeted by an array of jazz music and snacks.

Student Advisory Group meeting in action!

Next all of the members were seated and made name tags with crazy, interesting facts about themselves.

After everyone had finished their name tags and snacks, Ms. Neale came up and introduced the idea and meaning/goals of SAG. The Chairs and Communication Officers introduced themselves (Cole, Maddie, the chairs, and Kayla and Maddy, the communication officers).

Then it was on to the icebreakers (games to “break the ice”). One of the icebreakers were the “bomb name pass” and the other was “switch places if”.

We came back together as a group and discussed about “Collaboration Norms” to support how we will share our ideas and use the seven ways to collaborate positively.

Finally, the SAG members shared their ideas, questions, and feedback on sticky notes which were placed in baskets.  These sticky notes will be taken into consideration and the feedback will help make our next agenda.

The chairs and the communication officers worked hard for over a month on putting this all together. We want SAG to be about student voice.

We look forward to our March meeting!
