From Library to Learning Commons

Over the last few months a committee has been collecting data, samples and expert feedback the Sir William Osler Library and its metamorphosis into the SWO Learning Commons.

Design Map

With input from experts in design and staff, the backbone of the transformation has been completed and the new concepts are being sourced for completion of the newly designed SWO Learning Commons.  The completion of these initial steps have allowed staff and students to explore the new space in creative ways already with club meetings, information sessions, and classroom presentations.  The Library Helpers are still actively returning and re-shelving books that have been borrowed while learning about our new filing system.

The concept of the new SWO Learning Commons will be to “facilitate and support dynamic learning experiences that utilize the best available resources, technologies, strategies and learning environments.”(OSLA, 2010).

The SWO Learning Commons transformation will include;

  • A large gathering space for class presentations and discussions
  • Small gathering spaces for groups of various sizes
  • Flexible reconfigurable spaces
  • Active areas and quieter areas
  • Easy access to instructional supports including technology and print resources.
  • Functional mix of furniture – chairs and tables, café tables, lounge furniture.

The goal of the SWO Learning Commons is to provide staff and students with a welcoming, flexible and dynamic learning space that fosters curiosity, creativity, and possibility.  This enhanced space will foster collaborative learning and connect learners to information, to each other and to communities around the world.
