Revised Remote Model Schedule Sherwood

Dear Sherwood Students and Families;

Uncertainty, worry, and change continue to be inescapable parts of our lives. Despite this, I hope you all continue to be well as you can be.
As you are aware, with the stricter measures recently announced by the Premier, we are moving to full remote learning for most learners (some of our students in self-contained classes may learn in school) beginning this week. This decision is not unlike the one we experienced after the December holidays.  There are, however, some important revisions to the remote learning model that will allow for pds 3/4 & pd 5 to have balanced face-to-face time if we ever do return to in-school learning.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF THE REMOTE REVISIONS:
  • We will continue with the Adaptive Model block timings, but there is the new addition of a Day 1/Day 2 schedule (please see the attached revised remote model).
  • The changes effect Pds. 3/4 and Pd. 5 as they alternate into block 1 and block 2.
  • Pds. 1 & 2 remain consistent in Blocks 3 & 4, respectively.
  • So,
    • On a Day 1: All students with a Period 3/4 class will join together online with their teacher for 145 mins (+5 independent study) of synchronous and asynchronous learning; while Period 5 students gather for 40 mins (+10 independent study) in Block two; then,
    • On a Day 2: All students with a Period 5 class will join together online with their teacher for 145 mins (+5 ind.) of synchronous and asynchronous learning while Period 3/4 students will gather for 40 mins (+10 ind.) in Block two … and so on.
  • The dates for each “Day” are spelled out in the schedule attached.
TIMELINES TO GET STARTED:
  • MONDAY, APRIL 19 – Transition Day: Teachers will connect with students at the start of each period on Teams. Please note that it is the last day of rotation 2 so we will use the rotation 2 timings for this check in (Pd 2 is in block 1).Teachers will take attendance and answer any questions regarding the new remote model. Once this is complete, students will log off and use the rest of the time for independent catch-up. There will not be any synchronous teaching or new lessons this day.
  • TUESDAY, APRIL 20: A full day of remote learning begins – it will be a DAY 1 – Periods 3/4 takes the 145 min block
  • WEDNESDAY, APRIL 21: Full days of remote learning continue – it will be a DAY 2 – Period 5 takes the 145 min block
  • The days then continue full remote as per the attached schedule until we are out of the stay-at-home lockdown.

WHY DAY 1 and 2?:
  • This tweak to the model will allow for face-to-face time for both periods 3/4 and 5 if we ever return to in-school learning for all (the remaining face-to-face time upon our return to the adaptive model will split be split between pds 3/4 & 5).
OTHER ITEMS TO NOTE:
  • Attendance is taken daily for each period.
  • Coop may continue if the placement remains open and all lockdown regulations are adhered to–your coop teacher will confirm this with you.
  • If you have are having troubles with your I-Pad or do not have access to the Internet, please contact the school.
  • Mid-Term marks will be available in the Parent Portal and sent home electronically the week ending April 30th.
  • Commencement: We had been hoping to host small “parking lot” commencement ceremonies during the week of June 14th where a few small ceremonies would take place in our parking lot with families in their cars (if we got to an “orange” zone by the end of June), or at the very least a “drive-by” commencement (if in a more restrictive colour zone), but all plans are on hold now with this strict lockdown. More information to come based on Public Health restrictions at the time. Also, as a gift to all potential graduates, the school has purchased a cap, tassel, and gown for all–if you haven’t picked yours up, please email the school to make safe pick-up arrangements.
The staff at Sherwood Secondary know that these are not ideal learning conditions for our students and that many are struggling. Staff are doing their best to minimize the workload while still teaching and assessing the essentials of the curriculum needed to earn a credit. Students, even if you feel it is hopeless and you haven’t been engaging, please reach out to your teachers and/or guidance counsellor as they will work with you to catch up–even 1 credit is better than completely disengaging–we are here to support you.
We are an email away if needed–please don’t hesitate.
