Remote Learning Extension until Feb. 10

To address COVID-19, Ontario has declared a second provincial emergency and a stay-at-home order to reduce mobility.

During the provincial emergency, elementary and secondary schools in Hamilton and other priority areas will continue remotely learning from home until February 10, 2021. Before- and after-school programs will reopen when in-person instruction resumes.

Provincial requirements and timelines are set by the Ministry of Education and may change.

In-person instruction and transportation services will continue for students with pervasive special education needs or those engaged in treatment programs during this emergency period.

Starting 12:01 a.m. Thursday, January 14, 2021, a stay-at-home order will require everyone to remain at home with exceptions for essential purposes, such as going to the grocery store or pharmacy, accessing health care services, for exercise or for essential work.

Thank you for helping ensure that learning continues at HWDSB.

Message from Chair and Director

Board Chair Dawn Danko, and Education Director Manny Figueiredo share the following message to families and staff as we are asked to support Ontario’s second provincial emergency to curb the spread of COVID-19.

“As we work to educate students in a crisis, we know that this is a critical time to support our community and one another.

Fall of 2020 required us to embrace enhanced public health protocols – but kept some of our school routines intact. We are heading into a winter unlike any we have known. We miss the full school experience as much as you do.

We appreciate the clear direction the Ontario government gave us today, announcing that remote learning will continue until February 10, 2021. Families can now plan, staff can continue to support remote learning, and educators can adapt and finalize lesson plans.

Each family, whether that of a student or staff member, is unique. This makes it essential for us to respond with empathy to each situation. We will continue to learn during this period, with patience and resilience. We will offer flexibility when we are able.

This is a difficult time, but we are facing it together. We are a resilient community of students, staff and families. We will get through this in the most productive and positive way possible.”
