For many parents, the question “What Next?” looms heavy as their child approaches graduation from high school and begins transitioning into post-secondary life. It can be a daunting task to figure out what programs are available for their child.
The What’s Next Resource Guide to post-secondary life may be able to make that challenge a little easier for you.
The Guide provides a list of services available to you and your child, as they approach, enter, and reside in post-secondary life. It also offers an overview and contacts for:
- Community Services
- Continuing Education
- Employment Supports
- Recreation and Leisure
- Camps & Day Programs
Many programs require referrals from Contact Hamilton (if under the age of 18) and Developmental Services Ontario – DSO (if 18 or older). It is strongly recommended you contact these agencies to learn how to register and what they can offer your child. Not all programs listed require referrals. Make sure to ask when investigating programs.
Also, many programs have “wait-lists”, so the sooner you can make contact and touch base, the greater the opportunity the programs that interest you may be available upon your child’s graduation.
Although the Guide is provided to assist with learning about post-secondary options, it is only part of the transitioning partnership between HWDSB, yourself, and your child. At your child’s school a Transition Team will work with you to help create the most appropriate pathway for your child. Together, we can best prepare your child for postsecondary life.
