The following guidelines for appropriate student behaviour were established jointly by staff, students, parents and the school council in accordance with The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board policy which is consistent with the Ontario Code of Conduct. It strives to enhance the positive aspects of our school environment and emphasizes the need for co-operation, individual responsibility and mutual respect.
Academic Expectations
The staff of Saltfleet District High School have high expectations for their students. We expect them to develop, through sustained effort, the highest level of academic achievement of which they are capable. In order to reach their academic potential, students must bring the required materials to class, participate actively and positively in class activities and complete assigned homework. Requirements for borrowing and returning books must be observed.
The Learning Environment
All students and staff of Saltfleet District High School have the right to a school environment that is conducive to effective learning and teaching. To help students learn personal responsibility for their own behaviour within this environment, this code outlines the responsibilities, expectations and consequences for the members of the Saltfleet student community. Students have the right to an education without hindrance or disruption, as well as a corresponding responsibility not to deny this right to any other student. It is the policy of The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board of Education and in adherence to the Ontario Human Rights code that every employee, volunteer and student have the right to freedom from harassment in the work place and school system because of sex, sexual orientation, race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, age, record of offences, marital status, family status, employment status, or handicap. If anyone feels they have been harassed, he/she should see the Principal, Vice Principal or a Student Services counsellor immediately.
Field Trips
Many field trips are offered to students at Saltfleet, most at a nominal fee. Some trips are part of course requirements, and the student is therefore expected to participate. However, participation is a privilege and a student may be excluded if academic progress or regular attendance is unsatisfactory. The inclusion of a student’s name on the trip’s roster is at the discretion of the teacher in charge and the vice-principal/principal. While on a school trip students are still legally “in school” and all the school rules and expectations still apply.
Consequences
Responsible behaviour creates an environment which is conducive to effective learning and teaching. Misbehaviour carries consequences. A progressive series of consequences will be taken against individuals who choose not to engage in reasonable and respectable behaviour. Consequences may include: counseling, detention, parental involvement, formal interview with a Vice Principal, withdrawal of specific privileges, financial or community service restitution, temporary withdrawal, behaviour or performance contract, suspension, referral to community agencies, and/or expulsion. Consequences will be appropriate to the infraction. Most situations will be dealt with by the staff member and the student on an individual basis. However, when requested by a member of staff, the student must proceed directly to the Main Office.
