Update on Wednesday’s incident

Dear families,

This is an update to let Saltfleet families know what has occurred at our school after the altercation on Wednesday that led to police involvement. An earlier message about this was shared April 6.

As you will recall, a dispute among students led to a fight in our school atrium. Police were immediately called and responded.

As the week concludes, Hamilton Police Service continues its investigation. At the school, we are following our Student Behaviour and Discipline policy to support a safe learning environment. Consequences for students involved in this type of incident could include a suspension and/or expulsion. Our school investigation will continue into early next week.

Saltfleet remains a safe place for students to learn and for staff to work. We thank Hamilton Police Service (HPS) for attending our school and for their support during the investigation.

This is not a normal or acceptable incident for our school. This incident has impacted Saltfleet students and staff, some more deeply than others. It is normal to experience emotions after this type of incident. People will vary in how they express and manage these feelings, which may include anger, worry and frustration. We have had additional staff, including social workers, on site to help this week.

Supporting students at a time like this is important. Families doing so may want to refer to tips for adults supporting children and youth after distressing events. Students and families are encouraged to reach out to staff for support. We have given our teachers information about supporting students.

In addition, students may wish to use the HWDSB Helps app, an anonymous way to find help for themselves for one another. Students can text 905-963-0066, download the app for iOS and Android, or engage in the web chat at www.hwdsb.on.ca/hwdsbhelps.

If you have any questions, please contact the office.

Sincerely,

Glenn Cooke
Principal
