Welcome Back & Updates to COVID-19 Measures at School

We hope everyone had a safe and relaxing March Break.  As you are likely aware, the province has lifted the mask mandate, however trustees have extended the use of masks in HWDSB until April 1st through the motion summarized below:

  • Masks will be required for all students and staff until April 1, 2022, or until a written ministry directive or policy is received that would make the motion out of order, whichever comes first.
  • That masks are strongly recommended in schools for students and staff, beyond the April 1 date, unless otherwise directed by Hamilton Public Health.
  • That staff provide exemptions for both students and staff as requested.
  • That a supportive and non-punitive approach be used when it comes to implementing the mask requirements.
  • That masks be provided in a visible location in classrooms and schools.
  • That the board continues to collaborate with Hamilton Public Health to monitor and respond to local changes going forward.

As mentioned in the third bullet, students and staff may request a mask exemption.  For students, the process is to submit the completed form linked below to the school office.

The form is also available in the Parent Portal.

We expect that everyone will be respectful, empathetic and kind as we all adjust to the change in COVID-19 protocols.  Other important reminders include:

  • Daily Screening: All students must continue to complete the Government of Ontario online COVID-19 school screening tool found at hwdsb.info/screening prior to attending school each day, but no longer need to show they have completed the screening tool.  The screening tool has been updated to reflect updated isolation and self-monitoring requirements.
  • Stay home if sick: Students must stay home if sick to reduce the spread of illness. Symptomatic students at school will continue to isolate and be sent home based on criteria in screening tool.
  • International travel: Families returning from international travel must follow requirements from the Government of Canada. Students and staff returning from international travel will be required to wear a mask at school for 14 days.

We look forward to seeing  you back at school on Monday, March 21st.
