Shelter in Place Drill March 9

This coming Wednesday March 9, Saltfleet High School will be reviewing and participating in a “Shelter in Place” drill in the morning. This secure school response is used when the school needs to be secured due to a potential environmental or weather-related hazard outside the school. It requires that we all remain in the building to stay safe (e.g. chemical spill near a school site, electrical outages, explosions or extreme weather conditions).

During a “Shelter in Place” response, the Principal or designate will make an announcement as follows: “Our school is initiating a Shelter in Place response. Everyone should be inside the school and remain in the building with the doors and windows closed. Normal operations may continue within the building. Thank you.”

Once the “Shelter in Place” response has ended, there will be an announcement from the office to confirm that will be “Our school has completed a Shelter in Place response. Thank you for your co-operation.” The most important thing to remember is that while in a “Shelter in Place” response our school and classes continue to function as they normally would. As always, students are expected to follow the directions of their teachers.

As a reminder, during any secure school procedure, there is the potential that uniformed police may be in the building to inform and support best practices as they relate to the safety of the school community. The upcoming drill will align with Public Health Guidelines, which means we will continue the use of masks, will remain physically distanced and there will be no change to school ventilation or heating operation.

Please note that in the event of an emergency or crisis, public health advice related to COVID-19 may not be achievable, based on the response required. In an emergency/crisis event, priority is on the imminent threat, not enhanced public health measures.
