At Orchard Park, the Learning Resources Department provides special education services to students who have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
Within the first 30 business days of the new school year, students will meet with their Learning Resource Teacher (LRT) to review their IEP and learn how resource supports can help them. Learning Resource teachers monitor and support students on an on-going basis which includes regular contact with classroom teachers. Other services include: assessment of abilities, updating IEPs as per current needs, withdrawal support, indirect and direct support within the regular classroom and new referrals to special education services.
Once per year, parents/guardians and the student are invited to an Identification, Placement & Review Committee (IPRC) Annual Review meeting to discuss the student’s current identification, placement, academic progress and transitional planning for post-secondary needs.
Learning Resource staff are on duty in Orchard Park’s Learning Commons (LC) during instructional periods to support with implementing the student’s IEP.
The Learning Commons is designed to assist students who require withdrawal support from their regular classroom. Students wishing to access support during class time must receive the permission of their classroom teacher, who will provide a yellow slip for admission to the Learning Commons.
Orchard Park’s Student Success Team works collaboratively to address potential difficulties and discuss solutions to ensure that all students realize their full academic potential. This team includes staff from Learning Resources, Administration, Guidance Counsellors, Student Success, HWDSB Consultants and a School Social Worker.
