Welcome to Orchard Park Technological Education
The Technological Education curriculum at Orchard Park is unique in scope and quality. Subjects are offered in Construction, Transportation – Automotive, Manufacturing (Welding, sheet metal and Machine shop), Technological Design (engineering graphics), Architecture (Home Design), Hospitality and Tourism – Foods, Health Care, Computer Engineering Technology (with links to the world class OP 2056 robotics) Hair Styling & Aesthetics and Barbering (new!).
Our curriculum is based on safe practices and is by nature differentiated in its delivery and approach with an emphasis on performance rich, hands on work. Some students use measurement, layout, shop math and machine know how to produce products such as buildings, machined parts, sheet metal items, welded parts and circuit boards. Students can learn about computers or trouble shoot to repair a car. In some classes students design, read drawings, prepare drawings/sketches, build prototypes and use destructive testing to determine the quality of their designs. Our programs help to improve planning and problem solving strategies, self confidence, good character traits and hands on skills that can be applied throughout one’s life.
Learning that is connected to hands on skills is grossly underrated in a student’s academic life. An article by Cynthia Reynolds in Macleans magazine on August 29th, 2011 notes that “After NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab noticed its new engineers couldn’t do practical problem solving the way its retirees could, it stopped hiring those who didn’t have mechanical hobbies in their youth. When MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) realized its engineering students could no longer estimate solutions to problems on their own, and that they needed their computers, they began adding remedial building classes to better prepare these soon-to-be professionals for real-world jobs, like designing airplanes and bridges”. Architecture schools are also adding back-to-basics courses. In recent research it was found that when learning is connected to our hands, it is more successful. Children allowed to count with their fingers in early grades have better math scores in later grades.
Grade Levels:
Grade 9 students work on a variety of projects to get a taste for the available programs. In grade 10, 11 and 12 students can specialize in one or more areas of interest.
OP Tech believes in providing “options” for students to explore and all students are encouraged to take Tech programs to enhance their overall learning!
