Principal’s Corner – February 6 2020

It is hard to believe we are already a month into the new year and decade. The past month made for some exciting learning in and out of the classroom.

With the construction completed, our grade 7 & 8 middle school students had their first long-awaited dance. The gym was transported into a winter celebration by the grade 8 leaders’ team of decorators and our student DJs did an excellent job.

Speaking of the completed construction, we are happy to report that our new Learning Commons (formerly the library) is up and running. We had a team of library technicians in to help get the books unpacked and the space set up. We have ordered furniture and the first delivery arrived this week. The space is coming together nicely. We look forward to sharing more photos of our new learning space as the last of the furniture arrives and is set up.

The new alternative seating in the Learning Commons gets a thumbs up                               |                 Reading together in the newly renovated Learning Commons

The Kindness Club collected and prepared fabric to be sent overseas to Australia in support of the wildlife harmed in the wildfires. The club collected an impressive stack of fabrics and participated in the #GlobalCraftMovement.

You may have noticed the motivational messages and quotes that we have been sharing on our Twitter account. Those messages have come from our Kindness Club as well. The students have been selecting the quotes and then having been using their artistic eyes to letter the words on our white board in the front foyer.

Our primary grades 1-3 celebrated Carnival last week with a parade and winter carnival activities outside on the playground and in their classrooms. Our students had a great time learning about winter carnival with these hands-on experiences. We’d like to thank our grade 8 helpers who help run the outdoor fun for carnival.

February is Black History Month and we celebrate the many achievements and contributions of black Canadians, past and present, who have made Canada the country it is today. This month, we are celebrating the contributions of African-Canadians to the social, economic, and cultural life of our city and country, as well as remembering that there is still work to be done to remove barriers, challenge discrimination and oppose racism facing our black communities.
