Mary Hopkins News – Sept 12

Good Evening,

Thank you to everyone for a fantastic start-up.  With most students back at Mary Hopkins and so many new families, we are certain you notice the growth both out on the playground and in our school.  Our enrollment is currently about 515 students, with 22 classrooms.  With our increasing numbers, routines may take a few extra minutes, please be patient at pick up and drop off.

Important Dates

Sept 17 – Fire Drill #1(AM)

Sept 30 – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation – Orange Shirt Day

Kiss and Ride – A reminder to families that our parking lot can be used as a Kiss & Ride drop off for Grade 1-5 students.  For student safety, we ask that you drive right up to the gate and follow the directions outlined in the attachment. Parking Lot Kiss and Ride

Grace Church Parking Lot – Due to ongoing renovations, the church parking lot is not currently available for parking.  A reminder that the Grace Church parking lot is a private lot.  The church allows Mary Hopkins families the use of this lot as a courtesy.  Please be kind to those working on-site.

Kindergarten Drop Off – With our growth and a larger number of parents at home, we have more families doing in-person drop off than ever.  Both cars and pedestrian must have good sightlines and safe passage each morning.  Please do your best to keep the sidewalk and roadway clear for all those who need to pass.

Daily Attestations – A reminder to use the method provided by your classroom teacher to indicated screening each day.  It may also help to set a daily electronic reminder or place a note by your exit door.  This protocol is all part of  helping to keep our school community healthy and safe.

Life-Threatening Allergies – We want all children, including those with a life-threatening allergy, to feel safe, supported and accepted at school. Please be aware that students at our school have severe life-threatening food allergies to any food containing nuts. This life-threatening allergy is likely to result in anaphylaxis, a sudden and severe allergic reaction that can be fatal.  We ask that you do not send any lunches or snacks containing nuts. Your child’s teacher may also reach out if there is an additional severe food allergy in your child’s classroom that needs to be considered.  Thank you for your support and understanding.

French Immersion Advisory Council Involvement –  Flyer-FASLAC 2021

Ventilation – Ventilation is an important protective measure for safe school environments.  These upgrades include projects funded through Canada and Ontario’s CVRIS-EDU program and about 1,039 High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) units being shipped to classrooms and schools. The HEPA units have been provided in accordance with Ministry of Education direction. This includes all Kindergarten spaces, schools without mechanical ventilation (Tier 3), and where there are active ventilation projects underway and not yet completed. There are three tiers of ventilation as identified by the Ministry of Education. They are Tier 1 (supply, return, exhaust), Tier 2 (supply, exhaust) and Tier 3 (exhaust).  Tier 3 schools are typically heated with radiators and have exhaust units for moving air. These schools will be receiving HEPA units to help improve ventilation.  Mary Hopkins is a Tier 3 school as defined by the Ministry of Education. Families are encouraged to visit the Board’s Ventilation webpage and read its Frequently Asked Questions section for more details. You can also find additional school-specific ventilation information through the Ministry of Education’s Standardized Ventilation Reports, which have been posted online.
