Kanétskare Happenings Oct. 31st – Nov. 4th

Good afternoon Kanétskare Families,

We are excited to share that we have completed our student & staff vote for our new school colours and logo.  On the ballot, students and staff provided their input with respect to the following three variables:

Colour: Blue/Orange OR  Blue/Yellow

Background: Shape of a Circle  OR  Shape of a K

Mascot: Coyotes   OR   Geese   OR   Grizzlies   OR   Turtles

I have sent our student/staff voice results to our Superintendent for approval as per the school logo renaming procedure.  Please know I will update our school community as soon as I can.  More excitement is on the way!

A few updates for your calendar as to the events happening at our school next week.

Monday Oct. 31st – Please see the letter below outlining our activities and guiding questions for Halloween costumes if your child chooses to wear one.  This is an individual choice to wear a costume; however, please use these questions to guide your thinking.

Hello families/caregivers of our Kanéstkare students!

We are excited to announce that we will be having a “Fall into Autumn” activity block on Monday, October 31, 2022. Students will be able to participate in one of the following activities:

1) a School dance

2) a Board game room (no devices)

3) the Arts room

4) a Movie room.

Our activities will take place from 1:40-2:55. Students may wear costumes to school on Monday, October 31st (e.g., no cultural appropriation, no offensive and insensitive costumes, no weapons, no masks permitted as face coverings are required, no inappropriate images, etc.)

  • Students choosing to wear a costume should come to the school already wearing the costume and keep the costume on for the duration of the day (we won’t be able to manage any changing of costumes at school)
  • Cultural Appropriation and Costumes: Cultural appropriation means taking or borrowing a look or trait from a culture that is not your own. Costumes that are based on people’s culture are offensive, harmful and insensitive. The following are suggested questions, to reflect on when choosing a costume to avoid being disrespectful:
  • Is my costume making fun of a group of people, their culture, religion and/or belief systems?
  • Does my costume reinforce jokes and stereotypes about certain groups, cultures, religions and/or belief systems?
  • Am I altering my skin color, facial/body features to make it like a particular race, ethnicity, or cultural group?
  • Am I dressing up as a culture or borrowing from a religion that is not my own or is not part of my background?

We are looking forward to a great afternoon,

Kanétskare Staff
