September 11, 2020
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year at Helen Detwiler. We look forward to working with our students, families and community partners to make this a great year.
This will definitely be a year of changes and new learning for all. As we begin to implement new COVID-19 measures to keep all of our students and staff safe, some things will be different at the school. For example, students will have Home Quads outside on the field where they will arrive each morning, spend Nutrition Break and even learn outside with only their class. Students will no longer visit different classrooms for different subjects, rather the classroom teachers will be moving from room to room. Even though there are changes, one thing is certain, we are committed in creating memorable moments for all of our Helen Detwiler community.
We value communication between home and school and will communicate through our newsletter, website and Twitter account. Please subscribe to our school website in order to receive notifications when the website has updated information that may be helpful to you. You can also follow us on Twitter @HDHurricanes for school updates and community information. Our newsletter is published the first week of every month and will be published digitally.
Each student in Grade 1-8 will receive a school agenda. The school agenda is a valuable tool we rely on to ensure communication between home and school. Please take time to review the General Information section at the front of the agenda to become familiar with our school procedures and the code of conduct that supports our students. We ask that you please sign off on the front page of the agenda once you have read through the material.
Student safety is our main priority here at Helen Detwiler. With all of our students entering and exiting the building on a daily basis, we need to work together to ensure student safety. The front of the school is reserved for our buses to pick up and drop off students before and after school. All students will be dismissed out of the Kindergarten, Primary or Junior Doors at their Home Quads. Only bused students exit out the front of the building. To ensure student safety, the staff parking lot connected to our school grounds is out of bounds to parent vehicles & students. The parking lot directly in front of our Kindergarten doors is only to be used by our EarlyON Centre. When using the kiss & ride lane to drop off students, please be sure you pull up to the curb lane before anyone exits the car. You are welcome to park your car in the lot at the entrance to the kiss & ride lane.
On behalf of the administrative team we look forward to an excellent year.
