Community Weekly Update Jan 11-14

Hello Gatestone Families,

Thank you for your patience and time to support our students in online learning this past week.  We appreciate all of your efforts here to ensure your child is participating in education.  We understand remote learning poses many challenges for our parents so please know our staff is here to support as best we can.

Kindergarten Families

A two-week program for Kindergarten students will be available for parents through e-mail/class HUB from your child’s homeroom teacher, or if preferred, a hard copy can be picked up at our main office Monday through Friday 9AM-3PM.  Parents entering school property must wear a mask.  Please ring the bell and Mr. Hazell or Ms. Reilly-Scott will be able to deliver this package for you.

School Main Office

For the next two weeks our office administrators will be working remotely as well.  Ms. Ashton and Ms. Mason will be available to support any questions or needs through e-mail.  Ms. Mason will also check voice messages every 40 minutes during the day and will be available by phone to support any parent needs.  Please leave a message and phone number or e-mail that you can be reached at so our office staff can communicate with you. The quickest way to communicate with our office administrators would be through e-mail.

Technology & Internet

All of our Gatestone devices have been deployed for families Grade 1-8 that made requests on the survey or connected with the school early this week.  Should your child need an ipad to support your child’s learning over the next two weeks because there is an inability to access online class, please call our main office and leave a message for office staff to connect with you.  We will place an order to the Board for your request.  Devices will be delivered to the school when available.  We appreciate your patience here. I understand this week there were concerns with internet services across the region. Unfortunately, these situations are out of our school’s control.  If we continue to experience some of these glitches please continue to have your child complete assignments they were working on or perhaps take a physical or mental wellness break until the issues are resolved.  We hope this week will be smoother.

Technology Etiquette

Students will have access to live class chats through microphones and writing.  Students are reminded conversations with classmates and staff should be focused directly on the class work.  Students communicating with peers during class time must maintain respect for all as if they were in the classroom in person.  Classroom platforms are not to be used for personal conversations.  Students connecting with peers during their break hours or outside of school hours should communicate with their peers through other forms of social media.  We encourage students to stay connected with one another, but please be mindful of these tech etiquette tips;

  • Remember if it’s on the internet, it’s everywhere
  • Keep information clear
  • If you wouldn’t say it face to face, don’t say it online
  • Always maintain respectful conversations with others and be kind
  • Report any inappropriate messages/videos you see to parents or another caring adult

School Day Schedule

As per Ministry mandate, the school follows its regular schedule.  Students will need to join into new classes when a different teacher is instructing.  Homeroom teachers have posted their schedules on their MS Teams or HUB platform.  If you have any questions regarding the daily schedule, please connect with your child’s teacher.  If your child’s password is not working to log on to the platform, please also connect with your child’s teacher as they have access to reset this for you.  Staff e-mails are available under our Staff Home Page on this website.  Schools begins at 9:00AM and ends at 3:20PM.  Nutrition Breaks remain the same, 11:00AM-11:40AM and 1:20PM-2:00PM.

Monday Day 3

Tuesday Day 4

Wednesday Day 5

Thursday Day 1

Friday Day 2

Attendance

Daily attendance will continue next week.  Please make sure your child is ready for school at 9:00AM and checking in to class for attendance.  The second attendance log is taken at 11:40AM after first nutrition break.  If your child will be absent, please report their absence in School Messenger.  Call outs occur at 10:00AM.

I understand the challenges parents are facing over the next few weeks.  Let’s keep working together to support our students through these challenging times!

Respectfully,

Kelly Reilly-Scott

Principal
