Hamilton, Ontario – Apr. 28, 2020:  Hamilton Community Foundation (HCF) has given a grant of $50,000 to the Hamilton Foundation for Student Success (HFSS) COVID-19 Relief Fund tosupport equitable access to education for all Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) students.

Access to internet has been a subject of concern for students in need as distance learning continues. The donation from Hamilton Community Foundation will help to provide this technological support.

“Digital equity has become one of the Board’s top concerns as we quickly transitioned to learning at home,” said Alex Johnstone, Chair of the Board at HWDSB. “Without internet many of our students are prevented from joining their peers in their online classrooms. We are extremely thankful for the outstanding support of our partners, HFSS and HCF, for their continued support in these extraordinary and extenuating times.”

The funds from HCF will support the learning needs of the most vulnerable and marginalized learners within HWDSB, who have been impacted by school closures, and as a result, cannot access in-school programs and resources.

“Hamilton Community Foundation values its partnership with Hamilton Foundation for Student Success and HWDSB,” said Hamilton Community Foundation, Vice President of Grants & Community Initiatives, Matt Goodman. “We share the commitment to ensure that each learner in our community has the opportunity to maximize their potential. We recognize that this commitment is challenged as we face an uncertain reality in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, and our support to both boards is directed to reducing that challenge.”

Hamilton Community Foundation provides grants and financing to a wide range of charitable organizations and initiatives to support community life. Their shared values with the HFSS are evident, as both organizations are focused on addressing the emerging needs of the community.

“Through our partnership with the HWDSB, the Foundation’s Board recognized the growing need for new and safe ways for our students to access technology and nutrition,” said Leah Schwenger, Chair of the HFSS Board. “We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from HCF and our community and we will continue to direct these essential funds to improve accessibility to daily needs for HWDSB students.”

The HFSS established the COVID-19 Relief Fund on March 27, 2020 and is dedicated to providing funding to support both the nutrition and technology needs of HWDSB students. If you are able to contribute to the needs of HWDSB students, donations can be made to the HFSS COVID-19 Relief Fund at www.hfsscovidrelief.ca.
