Preparing for Inclement Weather at School

On our first rainy day of the new school year, this is a fitting time to remind families of inclement weather procedures at school.

Getting outside for exercise, fresh air, and a break from the classroom is an important priority at Dundana. As such, we will plan to go outside even when the weather might not be ideal.

It is important to send your child with clothing that will allow them to comfortably play outside and then learn inside.  Rainboots/outdoor shoes, a change of clothes (for puddle mishaps), umbrella and/or rain gear, as well as indoor shoes are extremely helpful in the fall.

There may be occasions when weather is deemed too dangerous to stay outside.  This may include:

  • active thunder and lightning
  • temperatures below -15 or wind chill below -20
  • pervasive icy conditions on playground
  • extreme wind

If indoor entry is called because of these dangerous conditions, signs will be posted around the entrances asking students to enter via the front doors of the school. Kindergarten students will be directed down to wait for the bell with their Kindergarten peers and Grade 1 to 5 students will be directed to wait in the gym for the bell.

Decisions about indoor recess will be made in proximity to recess times, based on current weather and playground conditions. Individual students are not permitted to stay inside when the classes have been sent outside; there isn’t supervision to support in these situations.

When indoor recesses are required, classes will be encouraged to find alternate opportunities for physical activity during instruction time.
