Secure Schools Information for Dundana

Every year, school communities are required to engage in a number of Secure Schools drills to ensure all students and staff understand how to participate in the case of an emergency situation.  These drills include:  6 fire drills (3 in the fall, 3 in the spring), 1 hold and secure drill, 1 shelter in place drill, 2 lockdown drills and 1 bomb threat drill.

For more information about the specific circumstances involving each of these emergency situations, please see this link on the HWDSB website:  https://www.hwdsb.on.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Secure-Schools-Protocol.pdf

However, the Office of the Fire Marshal has indicated that it is essential to conduct drills that also align with current public health advice.  As a result, our drills this year will be conducted while maintaining physical distancing.  A focus on discussion, visual demonstration or a combination of both will be used when possible to help our students understand what to do in an emergency.

Please note that in the event of an emergency or crisis, public health advice related to COVID-19 may not be achievable, based on the response required.  In an emergency/crisis event, priority is on the imminent threat, not enhanced public health measures.

This week, we will engage in our first fall Fire Drill event.  To do this in a way that allows for distancing, information will be shared with all of our students about what to expect in an emergency, including exposing them to the sound the fire alarm would make.  Our first fire drill is scheduled for Thursday, September 16, 2021.  Whole school information will be shared with students about the drill during our morning announcements at 9:05 a.m.  Teachers will practice an evacuation with their class at a time during the school day that allows distancing from other classes.

The dates of future drills will be posted on the school website at least one day prior to our scheduled drill.  If weather conditions do not allow for a safe drill, the drill would be pushed to the next available school day.
