Central Weekly Update – January 10-14, 2022

Happy New Year Central Families!

As most of you know the province announced that all publicly funded and private schools in Ontario will move to remote learning starting January 5 until at least January 17, subject to public health and operational considerations. You will be notified by email / phone of any updates or changes to this announcement as soon as we hear anything.

This is an extraordinary time for everyone, and we know that many families are frustrated by this news and its timing. We had hoped that schools would be the ‘first to open and last to close’ but understand that Omicron’s spread requires strong action, and we must do our part to help.

At Central, our priority is to continue student learning. This is why we are moving quickly to deploy devices that will help ensure that all students can learn remotely. If you require a device and have not already done so please let your child’s teacher know. Many devices have been sent out already thanks to our amazing team of educators!. Thank you to all of our families for assisting us with the quick deployment of these devices so that students can engage in remote learning. Be sure to continue to use our Safe Arrival program if your child will be absent for any of their remote learning days. For instructions on how to report absences click here –  SafeArrival .  If you require assistance accessing the SafeArrival app please contact the school at 905 522-9690.

We will be sending out a few of the wifi enabled devices on Mon Jan 10 and Tues Jan 11. If you are having any trouble logging onto any of the devices please reach out to your child’s teacher or contact the school at 905 522 9690.  Please also contact the school if you are unable to log onto the Parent Portal and we can assist you. Please be sure to contact your child’s teacher if you are requesting a partial or full exemption from remote learning as there are required forms to be completed and sent to the school office.

We also have both hard copies and digital copies of Learning From Home Packages for all grades so please request from your child’s teacher or contact the school office if you need to come in to pick one up. When picking up devices or learning from home packages please ring the doorbell at the entrance by the parking lot and we will respond and bring the items out to you as quickly as possible. Please be sure to complete a screener and wear a mask when coming to the school.

Elementary students will participate in remote learning from January 5-17, 2022 in accordance with PPM 164 Requirements for Remote Learning, which provides specific expectations around synchronous learning.

Public health measures

Although we are no longer in schools together in-person, it is still important to follow all public health measures while at home or in our communities. Stay at home if you can, wear a mask if you go out, and practice good hand hygiene. You can learn more about temporary measures that will be in place in Step Two of the Roadmap to Reopen, as of January 5, 2022, at 12:01 a.m.

Mental health supports

We know the return to remote learning is not the best way to support student mental health and well-being, but we hope that it will be a temporary measure before we return in person. To help support your child or youth, please remember that HWDSB has many Mental health supports as the pandemic’s challenges continue.

In closing, please be assured that we will continue to support the return of in-person learning as soon as possible. We understand the challenges with remote learning or all students, families and staff. We continue to work towards making our schools safer, through ventilation work, reduced class sizes, hosting public health vaccination clinics and more. Please call or email the school with any questions or concerns (905 522 9690 / email : [email protected])

Thank you for your understanding and patience in this challenging time.

Mr. Carey – Principal, Central Elementary School
