Survey on Remote Learning in the Future

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) is discussing the future of the remote learning program if public health restrictions are lifted.

Today, we have asked families with children in elementary remote learning to complete a survey.

We want to know their level of interest in a permanent remote learning program AFTER in-person learning returns to normal.

We are NOT asking these families to make any decision for their child now. We are gauging their interest to help us plan possible future programming.

If you have a child in remote elementary learning, please check your family email on record with HWDSB to find a quick and anonymous two-question survey.

Questions and Answers:

What are you asking?

We are asking all HWDSB elementary remote learning families the following question: In September, if the Ministry allows us to return to fully in-person learning, would you still consider having your child or children attend the Remote School if that option is available?

Why are you asking this?

We are NOT asking families to make any decision for their child. We are honouring parent voice by gauging interest to help us plan possible future programming as part of our Elementary Program Strategy. This is also important for planning our staffing, in case we are asked to offer a remote learning program for elementary.

Will remote learning continue?

There is a strong possibility that the Ministry of Education will once again require school boards to plan for three scenarios for next school year (in-person, adaptive, remote) due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic (short term) and that they may also be asking school boards to offer remote learning as an option for parents and students (long term).

What about secondary learning?

The fully remote option at secondary will continue to be through eLearning courses, which is a different model than the Remote Learning Program used for elementary students.

Will we see results?

We expect results from this survey will go to Program Committee on April 6, followed by the Board meeting on April 19, 2021. We will make public any decisions about remote learning for elementary students well before the 2021-22 school year begins.
