Sue Dunlop Named HWDSB’s Associate Director, Learning Services

Sue Dunlop has been appointed to the position of Associate Director, Learning Services, for Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB). Dunlop will start the role effective August 9, 2021 as Peter Sovran, currently in the role, will start the new school year as Director of Education for the Upper Grand District School Board.

“It’s an honour to continue my career with the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board as Associate Director, Learning Services,” said Dunlop, who has began her career as a teacher in the former Hamilton Board of Education.

Sue became principal in 2006 working at two high priority elementary schools before becoming the Superintendent of Student Achievement in 2013. Throughout this time, Sue has proven to be an effective leader supporting students and staff as well as engaging parents and community partners. She has led Family of Schools 4 and held various portfolio positions including Continuing Education, Indigenous Cultural Safety, and Healthy Schools.

Manny Figueiredo, Director of Education said, “Sue leads with integrity and compassion. Those who have worked with her know that she is a champion for the success and well-being of students and staff.”

Described as a strategic and trusted leader, Figueiredo said that Sue brings a wealth of knowledge, skills and experience to the senior team. She has dedicated her career to the service of others and in support of school and system improvement.

“Sue will support the growth that we require to continue to build a positive culture in HWDSB with her deep understanding of equity, diversity and inclusion,” he said.

In an expression of gratitude, Dunlop said, “Working with Executive Council, Trustees, and our dedicated staff, I hope to build on the collaborative direction that will advance student learning and achievement in an equitable and inclusive culture that is positive and focused on student well-being.”

As Associate Director, Learning Services, Sue will have oversight of Equity and Student Engagement, Family of Schools, Program, and Specialized Services divisions. In addition, she will deliver on the Positive Culture and Well-Being and Students Learning and Achievement priorities outlined in the Board Annual Plan.
