Director’s Statement Regarding Removal of Dr. Seuss Book Titles

In response to today’s statement from Dr. Seuss Enterprises, the following message was shared by Manny Figueiredo, Director of Education:

“HWDSB is responding to Dr. Seuss Enterprises’ decision to no longer publish a select number of their books that contain racist and insensitive imagery. We want our families to know that we are in the process of removing these book titles from all Library Learning Commons located in all of our schools.

We are part of the broader community who have identified these books as being harmful.

In HWDSB, we are committed to delivering a curriculum that respects and promotes diversity and is culturally relevant and responsive. The delivery of education must ensure that no child experiences harm from the resources that are shared.”

Here are the Dr. Seuss book titles that are currently being removed: And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry StreetIf I Ran the Zoo, McElligot’s Pool, On Beyond Zebra!, Scrambled Eggs Super!, and The Cat’s Quizzer.
