Labour Update at HWDSB

In response to the Government of Ontario passed Bill 28, Keeping Students in Class Act, introduced on October 31, 2022, Board Chair Dawn Danko provided this statement.

“Supportive conditions for students are at the centre of this labour dispute. We know that when the adults in a child’s life are in conflict, children never benefit.

We are disappointed that the Government of Ontario passed this legislation removing our labour partners’ rights to engage in the collective bargaining process. An agreement should be respectful towards education workers, mutually agreed upon by both parties, and free from intimidation.

Our first responsibility is to our students. HWDSB’s contingency plan keeps schools open as long as possible, while maintaining health and safety. We continue to plan for labour disruption at HWDSB schools as workers respond to the Government of Ontario’s actions with an imposed deal. Our priority is to keep families informed as the situation evolves.”

Labour Update to Families-Nov 3

November 3, 2022

Dear Families,

We are writing to update you that HWDSB schools will be open on Friday, November 4, 2022.

This afternoon, talks have ended between the Government of Ontario and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). In HWDSB, CUPE represents about 500 caretakers and maintenance workers.

Today, the Government of Ontario passed Bill 28, Keeping Students in Class Act 2022. In response to this unprecedented legislation, CUPE has announced that they intend to engage in protests on Friday, November 4. This means that CUPE members may not report to work.

As we previously advised on October 30, HWDSB will implement a Contingency Plan and assign additional staff to keep schools open while it is safe for students.

Visit HWDSB Labour Updates to learn what is open, cancelled, and how Child Care and Before-and-After-School providers are impacted.

The situation continues to evolve. If the labour protest continues beyond Friday, we will notify you by this Sunday if we need to close schools to in-person learning on Monday, November 7.

We may need to contact you before or during the school day, or over the weekend related to these labour updates.

Thank you for your understanding during this period of uncertainty.

Sincerely,

Sheryl Robinson Petrazzini
Director of Education
